Course Description and Outcomes
Reading is a complex system of gaining meaning from print that requires the skills and knowledge of phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, & comprehension.
Skills and knowledge vital for writing include critical thinking, syntax, text structure, writing craft, & transcription (the physical aspects of writing). It it designed for adult literacy reading and writing tutors. It focuses on the above components of reading and writing using a lens that centers on common tutor questions, tutor tips, and demonstration videos.
This course is possible through content from Kathy St. John Consulting and the state of California, the NMHED-Adult Education division, and UNM Continuing Education, through which the course is accessible.
Course Outcomes:
Demonstrate an understanding of learner-centered tutoring
Describe the main components of reading and writing and how to informally assess student skills
Identify and respond to common literacy challenges adult learners face
Explore and practice effective strategies and texts for tutoring
Develop a structured tutoring plan with clear objectives
Course Preview
There are 10 required modules in this course on both reading and writing (one that is optional for tutors working with English language learners who are not literate in their first language). The course is focused around readings, linked handouts and resources, and tutor-learner example videos.
Course activities include an ongoing learning log that incorporates mini case studies, a final lesson plan project, and smaller assignments that include Try It! and Investigate It! activities as well as a discussion forum and quiz for each module.
Assessment will be based on the required submission of the learning log and final project and participation in the module quizzes and discussion forums. A certificate will be received when all 10 modules are completed and the participant has filled out the feedback form embedded in the course.
